Water 101

Water is literally the source of all life on this planet, and as such is our most precious resource.

The Council has been at the forefront of the campaign to protect Canada’s water resources. We are fortunate to have in our national chairperson, Maude Barlow, one of the leaders in the movement. Maude has almost single-handedly put the issue of protecting our water on the political agenda. She has been a tireless and eloquent champion not only of the need to protect our water, but also of making the right to water a  fundamental human right.

With the advance of climate change and water mismanagement the world over, water is sure to be a source of conflict in the future. The U.S. in particular is facing a water crisis, and is increasingly looking to Canada as a potential source of large amounts of water. In fact, through the SPP and the Deep Integration agenda, the U.S. is promoting the idea of resource sharing, and is trying to redefine Canada’s water as a 'North American' resource.

Council members are working hard to protect Canada’s water, to prevent any moves to make water a tradeable commodity, and to make water a fundamental human right.
